Horse shoers have been around since the time horses were domesticated but only during the Middle Ages has the profession gained popularity and horse shoer’s were in great demand. Horse shoeing was and still is a stable profession and a good way to earn a nice income.

In the 20th century when the agriculture industry was booming, horses were used widely for transportation and thus horse shoer’s were in great demand, but with the advent of automobiles their need and popularity decreased. Horse shoeing is a very lucrative but physically challenging job. In the present time skilled horse shoers can earn around 500 to 1000 dollars each day but a horse shoer also carries the risk of injury from the horse. As a popular saying goes one size does not fit all, and the same is true in the case of horse shoeing as horses bred for different purposes require different kinds of shoeing. Today there are a number of schools that teach horse shoeing. It is fairly easy to become a horse shoer if you are passionate about working with horses and are not afraid to take on physically challenging tasks. To become a good horse shoer it is also essential to have a good understanding of the anatomy of a horse’s leg. A horse shoer uses a number of tools for shoeing. Using proper tools is an important part of the profession. Tools form an indispensable part of contributing to a horse shoers success.

Incorrect shoeing might lead to injury and the horse may show signs of lameness or may become lame. Sufficient training and practice is necessary before one gains expertise in this field.

The agriculture department and a number of associations have laid down a number of guidelines for proper horse breeding and horse shoeing, and following these will help someone become a better horse shoer.
