Job Responsibilities
The job responsibility at the basic level involves the following:
- Installing facility machinery.
- Performing regular check ups and maintenance to ensure machinery operates properly.
- Reporting to senior level management in case expensive machine parts need replacement or repair.
- Troubleshooting as and when needed.
- Keeping tools clean and handy at all times.
- Completing the job completion sheet on a daily basis and submitting it to person in charge of time management.
- Keeping the work area clean and coordinating shifts with fellow workers.
- Keeping records of spare parts and their back up and ordering materials in a timely manner.
- Helping coworkers and newcomers and train them.
The job requirements at basic levels as a mechanic are different from those at upper levels. At higher levels they are promoted into supervision jobs. Higher level positions also need knowledge of basic concepts to efficiently troubleshoot problems. A mechanic must have basic reading, writing and arithmetic skills. A high school diploma or its equivalent is sufficient. Having a work related degree or vocational training in electrical, mechanical, HVAC, carpentry, pipelines and piping systems etc. is essential. A person should also have the capability to read blue prints and interpret them. These skills are helpful and are also essential if a person is planning a career in mechanics in the near future.
Besides the skills mentioned, a person needs to be physically strong and capable of lifting weight. An individual should be able to easily handle approximately thirty pounds of weight. Having sound vision, hearing capability and good reflexes is necessary. If a person has difficulty with vision or hearing then corrective measures should be taken immediately to prevent any accidents at the work site.
All mechanical jobs require good finger and manual dexterity to handle machinery parts. A candidate should be able to make precise hand movements applying just the needed amount of pressure and speed. They also need to be physically fit and be able to bend, turn, squat and stretch out his or her hands and legs while working.
Salary
The average salary of a mechanic in the United States ranges from $45,000 - $50,000. While the lower range is around $30,000 - $35,000, it can escalates to approximately $60,000 for higher level mechanic jobs. There are many high paying jobs in the same field that are directly related to personal expertise, experience and knowledge of machine parts.
