Diesel Mechanic Jobs description
A diesel mechanic repairs and maintains diesel engines used to run vehicles or machines, such as buses, trucks, ships, trains, electric generators, and other machinery. Diagnosing trouble, disassembling engines, and examining parts for defects and wear and tear are part of duties. A diesel mechanic reconditions and replaces parts, such as pistons, bearings, valves, gears, and bushings, using engine lathes, hand tools, boring machines, and precision measuring instruments. The job may require welding and cutting parts, using arc-welding and flame cutting equipment. A diesel mechanic may be designated according to type of diesel engine or equipment repaired. Related positions include diesel-engine mechanic – automobile, diesel-engine mechanic – marine, diesel-engine mechanic – truck, diesel-mechanic – construction, diesel-mechanic - farm; and locomotive repairer – diesel.A diesel mechanic should preferably have a high school diploma. Automobile repair and machine shop courses offered by many high schools and vocational schools are helpful. A course in science and mathematics is always an advantage.
