US-based Sklar Peppler Furniture is closing its factory in the Ajax suburb of Toronto, Canada. One hundred and seventy-four workers are expected to lose their jobs.
According to the United Steelworkers Union, the
factory workers have agreed to numerous concessions since the firm’s Canadian subsidiary sought creditor protection two years ago.
The USW will use recent amendments to the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act to ensure employees get the wages and
vacation pay they are owed in the event of a bankruptcy.
Sixteen miles east of Toronto, Ajax is a town of 93,000 people established in 1955.
