The St. Lawrence zinc mine in Balmat, NY, was shut down for the second time on Friday. Two hundred employees were let go. The company cited lower prices for zinc and high operating costs because of the geology of the mine. It was definitely history repeating itself, because the company had closed its doors once before, in 2001.
The company is required by law to give 60 days notice whenever more than 50 people are laid off. However, the company opted to give them 60 days advance pay and sent the workers home. Employees will also receive money for any unused vacation and severance of one week for each year of service.
