Procter and Gamble announced Tuesday they’re cutting 215 jobs at the Gillette plant in Boston. The cuts will begin now and continue over the next five years as the company begins phasing out older product lines. Procter and Gamble says they’re not shutting down the Boston location, but instead investing close to $100 million in the plant over the next two years. It will be one of two plants developing new technologies. The company’s older products are moving to plants in Mexico and Poland, while newer products, like the Fusion and Venus razors, will take their place in the Boston plant. A Procter and Gamble spokeswoman says most of the cuts will happen through retirement or voluntary separation packages.
Another location seeing job cuts is Devens, Massachusetts. Over the next year some packaging and warehouse operations will move to the Gillette plant in Andover. The remaining operations will move to Mexico when their lease in Devens expires in 2010. In all, Procter and Gamble employs close to 2,400 Gillette workers. The consumer products giant took over Gillette in 2005.
