Dockworker Jobs description
A dockworker is responsible for loading and unloading freight onto and off of ships, trucks, or trailers. Frequent lifting, pulling, pushing, and carrying of freight is required. Dockworkers operate machines that lift and move cargo. A dockworker works in a team called gang, and may also have to lift pieces of cargo by hand. Most cargo is transported in containers that fit on trucks or railroad cars. Dockworkers are also called longshoremen. Dockworkers have several different tasks. Checkers inspect the cargo containers, noting any damage or unlocked containers, and handle shipping and receiving documents. A winch operator runs the crane-like machines that move cargo between the ships and the dock. Other dockworkers secure the slings around cargo so it can be lifted. Gear repairers keep all the equipment in working order.A dockworker does not usually require any educational qualifications, however physical strength is essential. A dockworker must be at least 18 years of age. Some jobs require work shifts during the evening, night, and early morning hours.
