Engines break down, that is inevitable. We need qualified professionals who are skilled in small engine mechanics to repair them because small engines are just as important as large engines. Things that have small engines range from motorcycles, small boats, jet skis, off road 4 wheelers, go–carts, snowmobiles, dirt bikes, lawnmowers, snow blowers, leaf blowers, scooters, generators, chain saws, and air compressors. Since these types of small engines are needed to perform other jobs they need to perform at a reliable, high level because of how frequent they can be used. People mow their lawn very often and need a reliable lawnmower they won't constantly break down for example. In a sense, small engine mechanics tends to be overlooked with many mechanics gravitating to large engine vehicles such as cars, SUV's, trackers, aircrafts, helicopters, ships, and large farm equipment.

Many people enjoy working with their hands and do it as a form of hobby repairing and upgrading small engines. The advantage of this type of hobby is that if someone is good at it and is dedicated to always learn more, then can make a fine small engine mechanic career for them self. It’s very important to do what an individual loves and see if there is a future it in.

Mechanics is something people learn by doing rather just researching and reading about. Mechanics mat start out working on smaller mechanics and build their skills to later work on larger engine machines. These workers typically start out in vocational and training schools straight from high school. Motorcycles and small boats are slightly more complicated then most other small mechanics so these will require refined skills and education to increases an individual’s knowledge.

The employment growth for small engine mechanics is expected to remain relatively the same to minimum growth over the next decade. There are many factors for the decline of increase of small engine mechanics. With a struggling economy and with the housing market becoming very unstable many new homes are not purchased which affects the sale of home garden equipment such as lawn mower and other small engine machines.

Many people spend their leisurely time on boats and jet skis, people tend to purchase these items when they are doing well financially. On the plus side with the aging population and more of them retiring, they will have more leisurely time on their hands and will generate sales in leisurely activities. Those who do retire tend to spend the rest of their time in warmer, coastal climates by the lake or ocean. This will generate more sales in motorboats and other water related activities. Motorcycle sales have remained relatively strong and this is good for those in motorcycle small engine repair.

Small engine mechanics see the best opportunities form employment during the warmer seasons because this is when people garden more frequently, take their motorcycle out for a spin, and go on a boat ride. Finding small engine positions is warmer climates may be an advantage because areas of the country that do have colder climates throughout the year may experience lag periods.

Small engine mechanics may gravitate to one type of motorcycle to another with some being interested in Harley-Davidson or Honda. Personal interest and taste should be taken into account when choosing a small engine mechanic career. Those who work in the field they are interested in will tend to work better and more efficiency because they are genuinely excited about their career.

The average salary for many mechanics is around $16.00 per hour. This will vary depending on which type of small engines worked on, experience, education, and training levels. Advancements opportunities are available to those who show the necessary skills and build a significant amount of experience which can lead to a supervisor of manager position. With additional education and training those who wish to further their careers in small engine mechanics may become engineers. Engineers will design, test, and create new technologies to reduce emissions and generate better overall performance.

If teaching others on how to build and repair small engines is something an individual enjoys, becoming an instructor is another option available. Instructors of any sort must have excellent communication skills obviously, with small engine mechanic instructors especially because of the highly technical nature of the work involved.

Good costumer service should be a part of the small engine mechanics arsenal because many who do bring their small engines to be repaired or completely over hauled know very little about engine mechanics. Good costumer relations can establish a trusting, long lasting relationship for years. The faster a small engine mechanic diagnoses a problem the quicker they can fix which will create more work opportunities.

A form of small engine mechanic programs are from the Universal Mechanics Institute which offers education and training in marine mechanics, motorcycle mechanics, and larger mechanics such as diesel mechanics.
